No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
