The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits The Beloved Duo Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story movie debuted, establishing the animation giant as a major film company and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys
The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer avoids is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a fair and assisting giveaway items locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
