The Princess of Wales's Traditional Yuletide Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers
Her Royal Highness has organised her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The 1,600 guests will enjoy a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.
A Theme of Love and Generosity
The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the carol service.
A Gradual Return
The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Music and Opportunity
Those coming to the Abbey can listen to budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at tonight's service.
"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
